Prutton's EFL predictions: Aston Villa and Norwich to struggle

David Prutton

David Prutton returns with his Sky Bet Championship predictions for the first round of midweek games this season.

But who is our resident EFL expert tipping for victory? Read on to find out...

Birmingham v Bolton, Tuesday 7.45pm

Birmingham got a great win at the weekend after coming from behind. It was important for Harry Redknapp to get that result and I fancy them again at home against Bolton.

Filipe Morais being back is great for the Trotters and he's the creative spark they'll need this season. They've got a good defensive foundation and it's just about adapting back to Championship level. Consolidation is their main aim but I think they'll still be looking for a first win of the season after Tuesday night.

Prutton predicts: 2-1 (15/2 with Sky Bet)

Derby v Preston, Tuesday 7.45pm

Derby haven't exactly got off to a great start. Gary Rowett is still finding out a lot about his team after a few changes over the summer to his squad.

Preston got a great draw at Leeds on Saturday after playing the last half hour with 10 men, and I fancy them for another point here.

Hull v Wolves, Tuesday 7.45pm

Hull were in a lethal mood at the weekend with Abel Hernandez firing in a hat-trick. They've lost a few players in the summer and are using a few youngsters, but it's been a good start for Leonid Slutsky so far.

This is another test for them against Wolves, who have got off very well to life under Nuno. Money doesn't always equal success and it's still early days, but I reckon they'll nick another win here.

Leeds v Fulham, Tuesday 7.45pm

Leeds have had a decent start but would have been frustrated not to get the three points against Preston on Saturday, especially after netting so many in their opening two games.

You get the feeling Fulham will kick into gear at some stage, but a draw at Reading was a good result after playing basically 90 minutes with 10 men. Another draw for them at Elland Road.

Middlesbrough v Burton, Tuesday 7.45pm

Middlesbrough were a little bit lucky to get away with the three points against Sheffield United. They controlled the game for long spells but couldn't kill it off before that controversial late decision.

But it was a first league win which Garry Monk needed and I fancy them to back it up with another win on Tuesday night. Burton have struggled so far and I can't see any joy for them here either.

Reading v Aston Villa, Tuesday 8pm

Aston Villa need a result here. They were awful at Cardiff on Saturday and they've got to snap into gear at some stage. It was always going to be a tough game and Reading will be a tricky one for Steve Bruce's side as well.

Reading will think they can take advantage of a Villa side that haven't gelled yet and get a first league win of the season themselves. And I fancy them to do just that.

Prutton predicts: 2-0 (12/1 with Sky Bet)

Norwich v QPR, Wednesday 7.45pm

Norwich were shown on Sunday that you've got to be clinical in this division as they were dispatched by Sunderland. It would have been a real opener for Daniel Farke.

QPR got a good result at Sheffield Wednesday and face an equally tough trip here, but I've got a feeling they could sneak a win at Carrow Road.

Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland, Wednesday 7.45pm

Sheffield Wednesday have got so much firepower and they need to start producing sooner rather than later. It's not been the best start for them.

Sunderland got a great result at Norwich on Sunday as Simon Grayson got off the mark. He likes a low maintenance side and he's slowly turning around the squad to get that there. I think this will be an entertaining draw.
