Gillingham are set to sign defender Luke O'Neill on a Bosman free transfer.

The 25-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the Gills and will join when his deal at Southend expires.

O'Neill made 21 appearances for the Shrimpers last season as they finished just outside the League One play-offs.

Gills narrowly avoided relegation to League Two, finishing 20th and just a point above the relegation zone.

O'Neill - a former Leicester trainee and England U17 international - made his name in a superb season at Mansfield Town in 2011-12, after which he was snapped up by Burnley.

But he struggled to break into the first-team at Turf Moor and was shipped out on loan to York, Scunthorpe, Leyton Orient and two spells at Southend before joining them permanently in 2015.
