Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala, Reading striker Nick Blackman, midfielder Emyr Huws of Huddersfield and Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes are all shortlisted.

Ayala's commanding presence and central defensive positioning were key to Middlesbrough conceding just two goals in four games, and climbing to second in the table.

The Spaniard netted a winner with a header at Nottingham Forest as well on the week he became a father.

With three clinically taken goals in the month and two assists in the 5-1 win over Ipswich, Blackman is using his pace, movement and new-found confidence to devastating effect at Reading.

Blackman's goals are helped Reading move up to third spot in the table.

Huws has made an instant impact at Huddersfield, forming a strong partnership with Dean Whitehead, and he scored four goals in the month too.

The importance of Rhodes to Blackburn has rarely been better illustrated, scoring five of his side's seven September goals.

The pick of the bunch was a memorable strike against QPR, to lift them into mid-table on his return from an ankle injury.
