Brighton boss Chris Hughton has called the loss of Solly March "a huge blow" after it was revealed his season has been ended by a knee injury.

The England U21 international midfielder suffered a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament in the draw with Derby at the weekend and will have surgery this week.

March has played in 16 league games this season for the table-topping Seagulls, who remain undefeated in the Sky Bet Championship, and he had been reportedly linked with a January switch to Southampton.

"It's a huge blow for us," Hughton told Brighton's official website.

"Solly has been in exceptional form in recent weeks, was catching the eye with some superb performances and we felt he was getting better with every game he played.

"One positive for Solly, with the advances in that area of sports medicine, is that he will come back from this injury as strong and fit as he has been - if not stronger."
