Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe says he is delighted with Benik Afobe's work ethic and progress after he was criticised this week by his former club Wolves

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has played down claims from Wolves that striker Benik Afobe did not try in his final five months with the Championship club.

Afobe joined Bournemouth from Wolves for a club-record fee in the January transfer window and has scored three times in his first five games for the Cherries.

Wolves head of football development and recruitment Kevin Thelwell told supporters on Wednesday night: "Benik was no longer trying to play for us. That was undermining everything we were trying to achieve."

Howe insists, though, that Afobe has impressed everyone at Bournemouth since his arrival.

Benik has come in and made a huge impression with the squad. He's got a really good work ethic, a really good temperament.

"From our perspective, we are only worried about the future and not the past," Howe said at his news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League home game with Stoke.

"I think what happened with Benik and Wolves is their relationship, their story - it's not anything to do with us.

"We, in signing Benik, acted in absolutely the right way. We were delighted to sign the player and he has started so well for us. So, with Benik I'd rather talk about how well he's done and the future.

"I think Benik is the same - his mindset is to focus on us and the game tomorrow rather than comments made by his former club.

"You can only act with people and interact with people as you see fit. You can't look back. Benik has come in and made a huge impression with the squad. He's got a really good work ethic, a really good temperament. I have to say, with a big transfer fee attached to his name, he's handled that situation really well."
