Stuart McCall says trying to win the Scottish Cup should be Rangers’ main focus ahead of their fourth round tie with Motherwell.
Mark Warburton's side host Well in the competition after the winter break on January 21, live on Sky Sports 2HD, and are looking to go one better than their Scottish Cup final defeat to Hibernian last year.
Former Motherwell manager McCall, who played for Rangers from 1991-1998 and won six top flight titles before a short spell in charge at Ibrox in 2015, expects the Gers to prevail later this month, but said a good cup run and second spot in the Premiership are the aims for the season after falling behind Celtic in the title race.
"I think even before a ball was kicked everybody knew the title was going to Celtic," McCall told Sky Sports News HQ.
"Rangers' two aims this season will be to try and finish second, they've got competition from Aberdeen and Hearts, but the Scottish Cup is one that they have really got to go as far as they can.
"Recently Rangers have had some good results at home, put in a good performance against Celtic the other week - Celtic were too strong in the end - but I think it is all about the first goal.
"If Motherwell could nick the first goal that would add the pressure and the tension from the fans and the players.
"But I think Rangers have got enough ability and know-how, and they have got their own experience, and I would expect Rangers to edge the game but I'm sure it'll be a close encounter."
