Rangers have completed a deal to sign former Newcastle goalkeeper Jak Alnwick from Port Vale on a deal until the summer of 2020.

The 23-year-old had a medical at the Scottish Premiership side's training ground on the outskirts of Glasgow on Monday morning having agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract.

After being photographed leaving the complex as he was driven away by on-loan Arsenal midfielder Jon Toral, the club announced the transfer had gone through on Monday evening.

Rangers are understood to have offered £250,000 on Friday for Alnwick, who started out as a youth at Sunderland before moving to Newcastle.

With Port Vale seeking a different payment structure to what was being proposed, negotiations took place over the weekend and have now come to a conclusion.

Michael Brown, League One Vale's caretaker manager, admitted at the weekend after their 3-2 defeat at Scunthorpe it had probably been Alnwick's last match for the club and that has now proved to be the case.

The former England U18 international will compete with regular Ibrox No 1 Wes Foderingham for a starting slot in Mark Warburton's team.

Alnwick said: "I will work hard and push Wes as much as I can and see where that takes me. I'll give everything I have for these fans and this club, as I would at any club.

"Wes has been excellent, even back to his Swindon days he was excellent there too. It's going to be a tough job, but I'll keep training and keep plugging away.

"I'm just happy to be here. It's obviously a massive club and I will do all I can and see where it takes me."

Alnwick has played 79 times for Port Vale since joining them in the summer of 2015, including 31 games this season.

His arrival at Rangers will allow former Scotland keeper Matt Gilks to move on as he is seeking more regular first-team football.
