Prospective Man Utd signing Fred suffered an ankle injury in training with Brazil forcing him to sit out the rest of the session

Manchester United-bound Fred has been injured while training with Brazil ahead of their World Cup warm-up game against Austria on Sunday.

Fred suffered a "trauma in his ankle" while training with Brazil on Thursday, national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has said.

"Tomorrow we watch to see what happens and then decide if we need to do any exams or not but at the moment it is too early to say anything about him," the doctor added.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred passed a medical with United on Monday ahead of a proposed £50m-plus move to Old Trafford.

Brazil have been training at Tottenham's training ground and Fred was caught on the ankle by international team-mate Casemiro on Thursday.

Brazil defender Marcelo hopes Fred's injury is nothing serious and that he will be back amongst the squad sooner rather than later.

"This is the World Cup, everyone is training hard and working hard," said Marcelo.

"I believe that it is not that bad, it is not a big issue and he will be back with us as soon as possible."

Brazil open their World Cup campaign against Switzerland in Rostov-on-Don on Sunday June 17, before playing Costa Rica and Serbia in their remaining Group E fixtures.
