Guillem Balague's Euro 2016 Q&A: Spain v Italy, David de Gea and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Guillem Balague

Guillem Balague answers your questions on Spain's last-16 clash with Italy, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David de Gea.

The defending champions will be looking to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 when they face Italy in Paris on Monday.

Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Balague analyses the match, the reaction to the defeat to Croatia and mulls over how many England players would get in the Spain starting XI...

Can Spain overcome the Italians and go all the way in such a difficult side of the draw? (@nw_1711)

I know that everybody calls it the wrong side of the draw, the difficult side, but I think it is the right side. Only one team can win this and can you imagine beating Italy then Germany and France or England to win it?

It would be fantastic. Very demanding, certainly difficult, but I think if you are going to win a European Championship I would rather win it this way. If it means being knocked out it would be because we are not good enough.

Against Italy it will be about a few things. Can we concentrate when we lose the ball, can we press at the same time, can the centre-backs be focused as they were not against Croatia in the last few minutes? And, as Italy will defend most of the game, what can we do with the ball, and can there be enough movement off it?

There was a bit of a surprise when Vicente del Bosque played the same team against Croatia as he had done the previous two games, and I thought he must have seen the team was sharp enough. Then you realise, even after half an hour, that the team is not that fit.

I expect changes against Italy and it seems there are two ways it could go. One is putting in another centre midfielder like Bruno, trying to replicate the Xabi Alonso/Sergio Busquets partnership. Or maybe adding another type of midfielder, like Koke, who works harder defensively than someone like Nolito, for example.

But we will have to see. Del Bosque has been mixing players and nobody knows what he will do yet.

The first thing to say is that we will have to see what happens when the dust settles and things are looked up with a calmer head.

Spain could have to face Italy, Germany and France to get to the final - how mentally draining could that be? (Lewis)

Physically very draining because I am sure there will not be a single second for relaxing against any of those sides, and some of them could go to extra-time and so on.

Mentally it's uplifting, you go through those rounds and you just want more. I don't know why people are looking at it with fear. Only one team wins the tournament. Why not try to beat all the best sides?

Is it scary that France and Germany are still winning without even playing to their best? (@Freddy_Malik)

It's very difficult to play to your best in the group stage. I crossed paths with Lothar Matthaus recently and he said Germany are doing it the right way; making sure they qualify but still changing the side a little bit and ensuring everybody has some room for improvement. He thinks that is the way to win the tournament.

I wouldn't say Spain peaked early but they showed their quality very early and we relaxed in the third game thinking we had it all done, so I hope we were punished at the right time and we can show against Italy as a team and individually that we are better, which I think we are. If collectively and individually Spain are better, and they maximise their potential, then they should go through against Italy.

After a poor showing at Euro 2016 is Zlatan Ibrahimovic worth the risk for Manchester United? (@YaseenCena)

If he is surrounded by very good players he becomes a very good player. If he is surrounded by mediocre players he struggles. But that happens with every team in the world, so it's not a Zlatan problem.

Going to Manchester United is a way of showing that it's a good place to go, and others will join with Jose Mourinho also as a magnet. I think it's a really clever signing, even if he just gives them one year.

How far do you think Dele Alli can go in terms of leaving a legacy similar to Steven Gerrard/Frank Lampard? (@EllisFarra)

He's only 20. If he has another very good season next season then we are talking about somebody who has foundations for a big future. He has a lot of talent, he's very intelligent in the way he absorbs things, learns and develops.

I am pretty sure at the beginning that not everybody thought he was a Tottenham player and he might be sent on loan, but he has the intelligence to become a top player. Let's see if he can go to the Gerrard or Lampard level.

What was the reaction in the Spanish press to the defeat against Croatia and game against Italy? (James)

Three things came out of the defeat. Firstly, Del Bosque should have rotated, as after half an hour the team seemed tired.

Secondly, there have been criticisms of David de Gea and how he was beaten at the near post even though there was a deflection. I spoke to Thierry Henry about this and he said it was impossible to stop, although perhaps he could have been closer to the post.

De Gea has been told by some of his team-mates that perhaps he needs to come out more often from the six-yard box and he is not so convinced he has to do that. There is that tactical discussion taking place because if you put the defensive line very high he has to be comfortable coming out of the box.

Thirdly, the penalty. I already explained that Cesc Fabregas was going to take it but Sergio Ramos asked to take it and he is the captain so you have to give him the ball. Sergio Ramos said it was because he hadn't scored in a while, but the next should be Cesc or Andres Iniesta, that's most people's opinion.

When things go wrong, like the unexpected defeat to Croatia, tension gets created, some artificial, some real. Some media are exploiting the possibility that there are divisions in the side and they are trying to force the issue to make it a controversial European Championship, because these media outlets feed on controversy.

The public controversy has so far been Pedro. There are divisions in the role of De Gea and not everybody likes the fact Ramos took the penalty, but to then say the whole side is divided is exaggerating the point and I am sure qualifying against Italy will calm things down.

How many of the England players would get into the Spain starting XI? (Peter)

I am not sitting on the fence but I will say that Spain is such a different team to anyone else because of the way we play that I would not change anybody.

But let's choose one England player. If we base ourselves on the team that played the first three games perhaps I would take Nolito out and put Danny Welbeck or Daniel Sturridge in. But they are such specialist roles that if you try to put an English player in the role they may find it difficult while Spanish players are used to the tactical and collective jobs that have to take place with the national side.

I know Welbeck is not at the Euros but I think he would look good in that role in the Spanish side, playing wide and coming inside.
