Martin's Starting Stats

I was at St Mary's on Sunday to see Charlie Austin score Southampton's first headed goal in the Premier League since April 23 when Shane Long scored against Aston Villa. Austin was actually Ronald Koeman's last signing for Southampton.

The game against Everton means Southampton have five clean sheets in the six Premier League games when they have fielded their first-choice back four of Cedric Soares, Jose Fonte, Virgil Van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand.

Claude Puel enjoyed his first win over Koeman. They met as managers in 2006 when Lille faced Benfica in the Champions League. Puel also played for Monaco against Koeman's Barcelona twice in 1993/94 and they lost 2-0 away and 1-0 at home.

The game was the 747th career club appearance for Gareth Barry plus he has 53 England caps - so it was his 800th top-class match overall.

As for Josh Sims, I would venture a guess that a Premier League assist on a 43-second goal must be the quickest ever assist on a debut! If anyone can think of a faster one then let me know.

Sak race

I see that Diafra Sakho scored after two minutes against Man Utd on Sunday, but is that the quickest goal scored against Man Utd at Old Trafford in the Premier League era? (Sandy, Manchester)

Diafra Sakho put West Ham ahead at Old Trafford

MARTIN SAYS: Diafra Sakho did indeed get West Ham off to the perfect start at Old Trafford on Sunday with that very early strike that was officially timed by our friends at Opta at exactly 90 seconds, the second-fastest goal United have ever conceded at home in the Premier League.

Manchester Utd 1-1 West Ham

The quickest, though, was scored by of all teams Man City, whose striker Edin Dzeko netted after only 43 seconds in his side's 3-0 win at United in March 2014, and to rub further salt into Red Devils wounds, Manuel Pellegrini's team went on to win the title that season.

The only other time Manchester United have conceded at home inside the first two minutes was in September 2012 when Tottenham took the lead through a Jonny Evans own goal after 113 seconds.

Four-ling short

How many times a team has scored four goals in a Premier League away match and lost? (Cathy, Slough)

Alan Pardew, says changes will have to be made after Crystal Palace's sixth straight Premier League loss
Image: Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew (r) saw his side score four times at Swansea on Saturday and still lose

MARTIN SAYS: Poor Alan Pardew. Crystal Palace became just the third team in Premier League history to score four goals away from home, yet lose the game when they were beaten 5-4 by Swansea City.

Fernando Llorente's stoppage-time double stunned Pardew's side, but at least they have company in their misery. The last team to lose in such style was Reading, who went down 6-4 at White Hart Lane in December 2007.

That defeat in north London was actually the second time Reading scored four and lost that season, having been beaten 7-4 by Portsmouth two months earlier.

The only other example dates back to February 2000, when Bradford City lost 5-4 to West Ham at Upton Park.

Fifteen teams have drawn after scoring four or more goals away from home in a Premier League match.

Fewer fixtures

What's the fewest number of games across all competitions a Premier League-winning team has played? (Jack, Sussex)

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - MAY 07: Wes Morgan of Leicester City kisses the Premier League Trophy as players and staffs celebrate the season champions after the

MARTIN SAYS: There's been plenty of talk about Chelsea and Liverpool's lack of European football and how that could aid their Premier League title chances this season.

The pair will play significantly fewer games than their rivals, putting them in a similar position to Leicester City last time around.

Last season's champions played just 43 matches in all competitions, the fewest amount by a title winner in the competition's history.

Their remarkable run at the top was boosted by early eliminations in the FA Cup (third round) and League Cup (fourth round).

Manchester United's 1995/96 side are the only other team to play less than 50 games in a title-winning campaign.

They actually won the FA Cup that season, but crashed out in the second round of both the League Cup and the UEFA Cup, the latter to Roto Volgograd, now of the Russian third tier. The only played 49 games in all competitions.

That contrasts to the 2008/09 season when Manchester United played a record 66 matches in all competitions and still won he Premier League title. That season they reached the Champions League Final, the FA Cup semi-final and they won the League Cup.

Paltry possession

Sunderland had just 22 per cent possession against Liverpool on Saturday, but is that the lowest figure this season? (Richard, Surrey)

Image: Sunderland captain John O'Shea (left) and his team-mates had just 22.65 per cent of the ball against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday

MARTIN SAYS: Sunderland's 22.65 per cent possession figure against Liverpool was actually the second-lowest total this season.

Liverpool were also the opponents when the lowest stat was recorded. Burnley memorably beat Jurgen Klopp's side 2-0 at Turf Moor with just 19.62 per cent back in August.

Liverpool do like to dominate the ball, with three of the five lowest possession totals recorded this season coming against the Reds.
