Thierry Henry has confirmed he has played his last game for the New York Red Bulls following their exit from the MLS playoffs at the hands of the New England Revolution.
The 37-year-old former Arsenal forward spent four and a half seasons with the Red Bulls after leaving Barcelona and he amassed 51 goals in 122 appearances during that time.
Henry had hoped to bow out by delivering New York's first MLS title but, without top-scorer Bradley Phillips, they lost out to New England in the Eastern Conference final.
The Revs advanced to the MLS Cup final to face the LA Galaxy after a 2-2 draw on Saturday gave them a 4-3 aggregate win.
Henry confirmed his departure in a statement: “I am taking this opportunity to announce that unfortunately Saturday was my last game for the New York Red Bulls.
Enjoyable
“The decision has always been that I would leave after the duration of my contract and although that was never going to change, I didn't want it to distract from the progress of the team.
“I have immensely enjoyed my four and half years here and would like to thank everyone involved with this club who has made my time here so enjoyable.
“A special mention must go to the Red Bull fans who have supported this team through the good, the bad and the ugly times in the sun, rain and snow. You guys have really meant a lot to me and thank you for all your wonderful support.
“I will now take the next few weeks to reflect and decide on the next chapter of my career.”
Henry stopped short of announcing his full retirement from playing professional football and it remains to be seen what the Frenchman will choose to do next.
During his highly-decorated playing career, Henry won league titles in France, England and Spain as well as winning the Champions League with Barcelona and the World Cup and European Championship with France.
