Preston striker Stevie May's season is over because of a cruciate ligament knee injury.

The 23-year-old moved to Deepdale this summer from Sheffield Wednesday but has failed to find the net in his eight appearances for Simon Grayson's side.

On Saturday, having come on as a late substitute against Fulham, the Scot suffered a knee injury at Craven Cottage which Grayson has now confirmed will end his campaign.

"We got the news back yesterday and it's not good news for Stevie," he told a Thursday morning press conference.

"He's going to be out for the rest of the season. He's suffered ligament damage and a little bit of other damage in there. All the scans came back with what we initially thought could be the case but obviously we had to have it reaffirmed by the specialist.

"Unfortunately he's in a brace at this moment of time and will go under the surgeon's knife probably next week sometime.

"It's going to be a long, drawn-out case for him of rehabilitation. It's not nice for anybody to suffer that injury, especially a player we spent a lot of money on and were desperate to do well for this football club. We'll give him the best treatment we can.

"It's not just the physical side, it's the emotional side that you have to deal with in this situation. Everybody connected with the club is absolutely devastated for the lad because he's a good kid but hopefully he'll come back stronger."
