Antoine Kombouare has revealed that he is preparing to hand the Paris St Germain captaincy to Mamadou Sakho.
The France international is still only 21 years old, but has been part of the first-team set-up at Parc des Princes since 2007.
He has matured into a highly-respected centre-half, with a number of Europe's top clubs understood to be monitoring his progress.
PSG are determined to retain his services, though, and feel he will continue to flourish in the French capital.
The next step for him en route to the top is to inherit the captain's armband, and that honour may be heading his way from next season.
Kombouare said: "If Claude Makelele retires at the end of the season, Mamadou will be the next PSG captain.
"He is strong enough to take on such responsibility. He is the boss of the defence and I am happy with his work."
Drawbacks
Meanwhile, Kombouare has called on critics to lay off Brazilian winger Nene, who has seen his high standards dip of late and has publicly vented his frustration.
"When I signed Nene from Monaco, I knew his qualities and his drawbacks," added the PSG boss.
"Sometimes he can get frustrated, but that just shows that he is not happy with himself and the team. He is a winner.
"We must stop taking about Nene though. Every player has to improve their level.
"I am not satisfied with Mathieu Bodmer. Ludovic Giuly can do much more. Mevlut Erding can do more."
