National stadium tries new system in bid to resolve turf issue
Wembley has turned to the use of a Desso pitch in a bid to resolve the ongoing problems with the playing surface.
The turf at the national stadium has regularly come in for heavy criticism, with the likes of Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp and Chelsea captain John Terry particularly scathing last season.
In June, though, Wembley laid a Desso pitch, which uses artificial fibres entwined with real grass.
The Desso Grassmaster pitches have already been successful at clubs like Tottenham, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal and Wembley chiefs are hoping it will also solve their problems.
Desso pitches were also in place at two stadiums during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and will be used for the first time at Wembley during The FA Community Shield match between Chelsea and Manchester United next month.
The Desso system could then be used at the 2018 World Cup, if England are successful with their bid to host the tournament.
