Man City have explained why Craig Bellamy did not link up with the Wales squad to face Montenegro.

Striker misses out for Wales due to knee injury

Manchester City admit a breakdown in communication led to the Football Association of Wales being unaware that Craig Bellamy had withdrawn from the squad to face Montenegro. Bellamy was due to link up with his international colleagues at the team hotel on Sunday and was still not with John Toshack's squad at the airport on Monday. Wales flew out for the game against Montenegro on Wednesday at a loss to explain why Bellamy had not turned up. However, City have revealed that the striker aggravated a knee injury in Saturday's friendly win over Celtic and is receiving treatment on the problem. The Premier League club have admitted they forgot to inform the FAW that the 30-year-old would not be joining up with the Wales squad. In a statement, City said: "Craig Bellamy is continuing his fitness and rehabilitation work following a knee injury. "He suffered a reaction following Saturday's game against Celtic and is therefore unavailable to represent Wales in this week's friendly against Montenegro. "Craig's situation should have been communicated to the Football Association of Wales over the weekend, but a misunderstanding on the process meant this was regrettably not done until today. "Manchester City have now made contact with the Football Association of Wales to clarify the situation."
