Bolton ended their pre-season friendlies with a 1-0 defeat to AEK Athens at the Olympic Stadium. Perparim Hetemaj scored the only goal of the game in the first half in Greece, but the match was overshadowed by the red card shown to Bolton defender Gary Cahill. The match began in explosive fashion as AEK were awarded a penalty when Jlloyd Sameul was adjudged to have fouled Argentine attacker Ignacio Scocco inside the 18-yard area on 10 minutes. However, Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was at his best to stop Rivaldo's penalty as he dived to his right to save. Hetemaj, though, gave AEK the lead seven minutes later as he unleashed a thunderbolt that fired in off Jaaskelainen's crossbar. AEK continued to dominate after the interval as Bolton offered little as an attacking force and the match was disrupted by a string of substitutions. But Andy O'Brien almost earned Gary Megson's men a draw with the final touch of the match as his header drifted narrowly wide of the far post.
