Louis Soares' stunning strike was enough to give Aldershot a 1-0 win and their first victory in seven games against Port Vale. The 23-year-old winger cut inside from the right and unleashed an unstoppable drive after 14 minutes for the only goal, with John Grant and Danny Hylton also wasting good chances. After shipping eight goals in their two previous outings, Aldershot, back on home soil, flew out of the blocks with top scorer Scott Davies smashing the bar in the seventh minutes. Gary Waddock's side then made their early pressure count when Soares found space on the edge of the box and rifled the ball home. The visitors, fresh from two consecutive away victories, came back and Luke Rodgers looked certain to equalise on half-time but for a desperate clearance off the line from Davies. Hylton went close from a tight angle before home goalkeeper Nikki Bull dived low to his right to deny Port Vale substitute Ross Davidson at the death as the hosts clung on to the points.
