Flynn's men stumble to narrow victory

Wales have opened their 2013 U21 European Championship qualification campaign with a 1-0 victory over Andorra. Brian Flynn's side were a long way short of their best on Tuesday, with an unconvincing showing offering little cause for optimism. In the end they were indebted to an own goal from home defender Armand Fajardo, with his wayward back pass on 21 minutes ultimately settling the tie. While thankful for that slice of good fortune, Wales will be concerned that they were unable to shake off their shackles, especially as they went so close to qualifying for this summer's tournament in Denmark. Swansea full-back Ashley Richards captained a new-look side that was without his club team-mate Joe Allen due to a shoulder problem.

    Unfortunate

The visitors began strongly with Ryan Doble and Elliott Chamberlain both forcing early saves from Oriol Oliva before the goalkeeper was beaten by Fajardo's unfortunate moment. It was costly for the hosts who had the better of the second half but could not find an equaliser as Wales goalkeeper Rhys Taylor made three saves to ensure maximum points. Wales will now not be in action again in Group Three until 6th September, when they are away to Montenegro. The Czech Republic and Armenia are the other two teams in the group.
