Championship strugglers Leicester dumped their former manager Martin O'Neill's side out of the Carling Cup thanks to a second-half goal from striker Matt Fryatt.

O'Neill was on the receiving end of the kind of cup shock he handed out to more illustrious opponents during his five years with the Foxes when he twice won the competition.

Former Walsall player Fryatt settled the issue with a shot from a narrow angle with 16 minutes remaining of the third round clash.

Villa were unable to break down Gary Megson's side in the first 45 minutes.

Foxes goalkeeper Marton Fulop was called upon to make only one save of note when he tipped over a Shaun Maloney piledriver.

Iain Hume, meanwhile, wasted Leicester's best chance when he headed wide from close range when well placed in a half of few clear-cut chances.

Villa made a positive start to the second period and Leicester were indebted to a fine save from Fulop for keeping them on level terms.

The prospect of extra-time was looming as Villa struggled to unlock the visitors and, with 16 minutes left, Fryatt put Leicester into a shock lead, beating Taylor with a low shot from a narrow angle from a pass by James Chambers. O'Neill brought on Luke Moore and Patrik Berger for Harewood and Curtis Davies in a bid to salvage the tie, but Fulop denied them a late equaliser when he turned a dipping free-kick from Maloney around the post.
