Quique Sanchez Flores' side found some good early form with a 2-0 triumph against Champions League winners Inter Milan in the European curtain-raiser on Friday.
They had the weekend off to watch all their domestic rivals in action but began their campaign in perfect fashion with a convincing win.
Jose Manuel Jurado broke the deadlock for Atletico after just 11 minutes and Diego Forlan then made it 2-0 before half-time.
Uruguayan striker Forlan, continuing where he had left off at the World Cup with another fine display, then added his second of the night just after the hour mark.
Simao Sabrosa completed the rout in the 90th minute to send Atletico top of the table after just one game.
