Barnsley beat 10-man Sheffield Wednesday 2-1

Barnsley triumphed over 10-man Sheffield Wednesday in another rousing South Yorkshire derby as Iain Hume's early strike and Jamal Campbell-Ryce's second-half penalty proved decisive. Two days after their success over bitter rivals Sheffield United at Hillsborough, a much-changed Owls starting XI came unstuck against the Tykes, who belied their lowly status and eased the pressure on under-fire boss Simon Davey. Hume's emphatic early finish set the Tykes on their way to only their third league win of the season. The high-flying Owls were dealt a second blow in the 37th minute when Tony McMahon, on loan from Middlesbrough, was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Rob Kozluk. Wednesday appeared down and out when Campbell-Ryce converted a penalty on the hour-mark, but Owls substitute Leon Clarke picked himself up after Dennis Souza's trip soon after to slam home the game's second penalty and haul his side back into it. But Barnsley, with only one win in their last seven league matches, held on for a deserved win. Davey made three changes to the side beaten 3-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Darren Moore, returning from suspension, Hugo Colace and Jon Macken all back in the starting line-up. Wednesday boss Brian Laws was forced into a major reshuffle. Francis Jeffers made his first start since January following a serious ankle injury and on-loan Stoke defender Lewis Buxton made his debut, while there were recalls for Peter Gilbert, Wade Small and on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jimmy Smith. Owls captain Richard Wood and Sunday's match-winner Steve Watson were among those not included in Laws' starting XI and Wednesday were rocked in only the fourth minute. Martin Devaney's low cross broke to Macken and the former Manchester City forward flicked it back for Hume to lash home an unstoppable volley. In-form winger Campbell-Ryce went close to celebrating his new three-year deal by doubling Barnsley's lead in the 18th minute when his 25-yard shot curled narrowly wide. Hume then headed Campbell-Ryce's cross just wide before the visitors were reduced to 10 men. McMahon clattered into Kozluk on the touchline and after a frenzied melee of pushing and shoving by players from both sides - Tykes boss Davey could not contain his anger - the Middlesbrough man was shown a straight red card. Watson replaced Jeffers at the interval but Wednesday struggled to contain Davey's players, whose confident passing game belied their lowly position in the table. Wednesday's task was made harder still in the 60th minute when referee Phil Crossley adjudged Mark Beevers to have impeded Macken in the area following Hume's corner. It appeared a harsh call by the Kent official but Campbell-Ryce made no mistake with his penalty, low to Grant's left. Seven minutes later Crossley handed 10-man Wednesday a lifeline when Owls substitute Clarke was sent sprawling in the area under Souza's lunging tackle. Brazilian defender Souza escaped with a booking, but Clarke made him pay further by ramming home the spot-kick high into the net.
