Bayern Munich v Porto preview: Injury-hit Bavarians looking to create history
Tuesday 21 April 2015 20:40, UK
Bayern Munich entertain Porto in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night looking to overturn a two-goal deficit.
The Bundesliga champions lost the first encounter 3-1 on Wednesday and must now make history as they seek a fourth semi-final appearance in as many years.
Bayern have attempted to make up a two-goal first-leg deficit on four previous occasions in UEFA competitions, losing every time.
However, forward Thomas Muller has warned his team-mates against trying to push too soon for an early breakthrough and getting caught by Porto on the counterattack.
"We have to play smart and avoid kamikaze tactics," said Muller.
"Of course we feel the pressure, we have our backs to the wall, but having a challenge is a good thing for us.
"It is important to stay focused and score at least twice, but we can't leave ourselves vulnerable to counter-attacks.
"I am positive. A 2-0 win at home against Porto wouldn't be a miracle, would it? We'll have the crowd behind us, but it's down to us to score the goals on the pitch."
The Portuguese title holders, meanwhile, know just what a tough test awaits them in the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
And midfielder Yacine Brahimi expects the Porto defence to be placed under severe pressure as they seek to progress to a first Champions League semi-final since wince winning the competition in 2004.
"It was an exceptional display [in Porto]," he said. "We couldn't have dreamed of a better result than 3-1, but we've still got an away game to play and it will be very, very difficult.
"Over there we need to play the way we did [in the first leg] – that is to play our game and play normally. We'll have to defend very well and be strong as a team."
Team news
Bayern captain Philipp Lahm will start after recovering from a stomach virus which caused him to miss Saturday's 2-0 win at Hoffenheim, while midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger may also feature having trained on the weekend after recovering from both an ankle injury and flu.
However, wingers Franck Ribery (ankle) and Arjen Robben (abdominal muscle), as well as David Alaba (knee), Javi Martinez (knee) and Medhi Benatia (thigh), are missing with injury.
And Jerome Boateng, Juan Bernat, Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer are all just one booking away from suspension.
The visitors will be without full-backs Danilo and Alex Sandro through suspension, while forward Cristian Tello missed the club's 1-0 loss to Academica on the weekend with a thigh problem.
Betting
Sky Bet are confident that Bayern Munich have what it takes to overturn their first-leg deficit, making Pep Guardiola’s men marginal favourites to progress at 5/6. The German champions are just 1/3 to win on the night and 6/1 for a 2-0 victory, which would see them progress on away goals, while Porto are 15/2 outsiders and 4/1 to hold on for a draw.
Bayern drifted from 15/8 favourites to 4/1 to win the Champions League after their loss in Portugal, while Porto have come in from 66/1 to 16/1 to lift the trophy.
The Soccer Saturday pundits and Jamie Redknapp have made their predictions on www.skybet.com, while there’s also a host of Price Boost available on site.
