Bayern Munich compounded Schalke's woes at the end of a week to forget for the Royal Blues as they went down 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. After conceding six in the Champions League at home to Real Madrid in midweek, the last thing Schalke would have wanted was to be four goals behind after only 28 minutes. David Alaba, Arjen Robben (2) and Mario Mandzukic put Bayern in control of the game before a charitable Rafinha own goal gave Schalke some scant consolation. Robben then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Kyriakos Papadopoulos was shown a red card to round off another bad day at the office for Schalke. Visiting coach Jens Keller joked that he would be parking a bus in front of the goal, but he needed something bigger than that to cope with the runaway Bundesliga leaders. After only four minutes, a deflected Alaba effort looped past Ralf Fahrmann and the writing was already on the wall for a Royal Blues side still reeling from a 6-1 home defeat to Real on Wednesday. It was two soon after as Robben came in characteristically from the right to beat Fahrmann. Mandzukic made it three in the 24th minute from close range before Robben again scored in his predictable yet seemingly unstoppable style. Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes screamed at his team-mates, who tightened up as the wave of Bayern pressure showed no sign of abating. Things could hardly get much worse for Schalke, who reacted with pride in the second half, Julian Draxler tricking his way to the goal line and pulling the ball back for Klaas Jan Huntelaar to shoot wide. Former Schalke defender Rafinha did them a favour by turning a corner into his own goal past an irate Manuel Neuer, who conceded against his ex-club for the first time in his career. At the other end, Fahrmann made four stunning stops to deny Mandzukic twice, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze, but he was powerless to prevent Robben from making it five from the spot after Papadopoulos barged Mandzukic to the ground, earning a harsh red card. Claudio Pizarro then almost condemned Schalke to a second 6-1 defeat in four days, but he was wasteful with his chance.
