Schalke missed an opportunity to inflict a second straight defeat on Bayern Munich as they managed only a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena, despite playing most of the game with an extra man.

A red card for Jerome Boateng in the 17th minute suggested a continuation of a difficult few days for the Bundesliga champions, but Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting saw his penalty saved by Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben then put Pep Guardiola's men in front.

Benedikt Howedes levelled matters for the Royal Blues, but they will feel that they wasted a rare chance to win in Munich while Bayern will be satisfied with their first point of 2015.

After a cagey start, Schalke were given the chance to take the lead when Boateng fouled Sidney Sam on the edge of the area, earning a red card as well as giving away a penalty. Neuer dived the right way, though, and kept out Choupo-Moting's spot-kick, keeping the damage down to just the red card.

Schalke did not appear to want to take their chance with an extra man, however, and it was Bayern, through Robben, who went closest to opening the scoring in the first half.

The visitors resumed the game after the interval with debutant Timon Wellenreuther in goal for the injured Fabian Giefer and it was now Bayern who sensed an opportunity to test the rookie custodian.

He denied Robben before picking the ball out of the back of his goal midway through the half, although what would have been an own goal from Atsuto Uchida did not count since the ball had already gone out before Robert Lewandowski delivered the cross.

Bayern still took the lead a minute later when Robben headed in from a corner, but their lead lasted only five minutes before Howedes replied with a header of his own.

Neither side wanted to take a gamble and try to win after Howedes' goal, as they settled for a point apiece.
