Lyon's bid to secure a Champions League spot suffered a blow as they were held 1-1 by Brest on Monday.

Champions League regulars could fail to qualify for next year

Lyon's bid to secure Ligue 1's third UEFA Champions League spot suffered a blow on Monday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Brest. Lyon remain third with two games left, two points ahead of Paris St Germain, but their rivals have a game in hand at Bordeaux on Wednesday so now have the initiative in the race for Champions League football. The seven-time champions can now only catch second-placed Marseille on goal difference having also lost 4-0 at Auxerre last Wednesday. Claude Puel's men had started strongly, with Brazilian midfielder Ederson giving them a 15th minute lead, beating Steeve Elana with a close-range header from Miralem Pjanic's corner. Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom then blew a great chance to double Lyon's lead, firing narrowly wide after latching onto a poor clearance by the home side. Brest had struggled to put the Lyon defence under much pressure and the visitors looked on course for a routine win until Czech midfielder Mario Licka produced a superb volley from a Nolan Roux cross, just five minutes after Licka had come on in the 71st minute. And that draw could be crucial for Brest as they are now two points above the drop zone with two games left.
