Cambridge 2-2 Macclesfield: Sam Smith scores late equaliser in thriller

Sam Smith scored a late equaliser for Cambridge who shared the points with Macclesfield in a 2-2 draw following a thrilling second half.

The U's struck after 13 minutes and led at half-time courtesy of a superb low 30-yard strike by midfielder Jack Roles.

Kyle Knoyle's header hit the bar for Cambridge before Macclesfield's Theo Archibald somehow wasted the chance to equalise three minutes before the break, blazing over from close range after Arthur Gnahoua's cross fell to him.

Owen Evans saved magnificently from a Smith header just before the hour but the game was turned on its head 20 minutes into the second half as Macclesfield netted twice in four minutes.

Archibald made amends for his earlier miss with the leveller as he fired home from distance after 65 minutes, and three minutes later Gnahoua ran across the Cambridge backline before finding the top corner with his strike.

The home team responded 12 minutes from time when Knoyle's cross caught Evans in no man's land and Smith headed the ball beyond him for his fifth goal of the season.
