Last-gasp Bluebirds earn point

Shelvey and Bailey on target for Addicks, before Burke and Gyepes reply

Cardiff came from two goals down to earn a point at relegated Charlton and cement their place in the play-offs. The Addicks went two goals up with ten minutes to go after goals from teenage star Jonjo Shelvey (35) and Nick Bailey (80). But substitute Chris Burke pulled one back for the Bluebirds on 82 minutes before Gabor Gyepes scrambled an equaliser a minute from time to earn Dave Jones' side a share of the spoils, although their faint hopes of automatic promotion now look to have been extinguished. A win would have assured the Bluebirds of a play-off place, and although they look certain to finish in the top six, their 6-0 weekend hammering by Preston is not the form of Wembley winners.

Renditions

The visiting fans seemed relaxed about missing out on the top two, treating the beleaguered Valley faithful to renditions of 'We're off to Wembley, you're off to Shrewsbury'. Charlton boss Phil Parkinson may be dusting off the directions to various League One outposts, but a section of their support called for his head after the equaliser flew in. The visitors almost took a fourth-minute lead when Ross McCormack swung a free-kick into the penalty area and Roger Johnson planted his header narrowly wide. Michael Chopra, restored to the starting line-up after being dropped to the bench on Saturday, then darted across the edge of the area before firing in a fierce shot which Charlton keeper Rob Elliot tipped over the crossbar. But moments later Charlton were ahead when Lloyd Sam crossed into a crowded area and Shelvey was on hand to toe-poke the ball past Tom Heaton. Elliot then brilliantly tipped Joe Ledley's 35-yard volley onto the crossbar to ensure the hosts led at the break.
Second-half
After the interval Charlton's China international Zheng Zhi burst clear, only to shoot against the base of Heaton's post. Jay Bothroyd thought he had levelled in the 71st minute, but referee Iain Williamson brought play back for a foul by the striker. And in the 80th minute Bailey pounced on a loose ball eight yards out and rifled it past Heaton to double Charlton's lead. But Burke pulled one back for Cardiff two minutes later and with stoppage time approaching Charlton failed to clear a corner and Gyepes rammed the ball home.
