Chester remain a point above Grimsby

Ryan Lowe's cool finish earned Chester a 1-1 draw against Grimsby and ensured City stay a point above their relegation rivals at the foot of League Two. Grimsby took the lead through Nick Hegarty but Chester clawed their way back into it and deserved their equaliser in the second half. Town went ahead in the 21st minute after Joe Widdowson's floated pass held up in the wind, causing confusion in the Chester defence, and Hegarty stole in to drive a low shot under Chester goalkeeper John Danby. Chester had their chances to draw level in the first half but wasted them, with Kevin Ellison the main culprit. He smashed a shot into the side-netting after 15 minutes, volleyed over from six yards when unmarked in the 23rd minute and then headed narrowly wide shortly afterwards. Chester thought they had equalised a minute before the break when Grimsby goalkeeper Wayne Henderson was bundled over his own line but referee Phil Crossley ruled it out. Chester levelled when Ellison's shot from the edge of the box broke to Lowe and he cut inside Tom Newey's desperate lunge and slammed the ball high into the net from eight yards.
