Rooney and Evans find target for Macclesfield

Chester moved a step closer to relegation from the Football League as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Cheshire rivals Macclesfield. The Silkmen took the lead after eight minutes when Lee Bell's free kick from wide out on the left rebounded high off the Chester wall and sat up perfectly for John Rooney to blast a 20-yard right-footed volley low into the net, giving debutant keeper Jamie Spencer no chance. Gareth Evans nearly made it two after 27 minutes but was thwarted by a superb one-handed save low to his right by Spencer. But Evans was not to be denied two minutes later when he was played in by Colin Daniel and smashed a vicious right-footed drive in off the underside of the bar. Ryan Lowe sent a shot over the top for the Blues, but the visitors could have added more goals with Nat Brown firing wide and Daniel having a shot cleared off the line by Kevin Roberts. Substitute Shaun Kelly had Chester's best chance 10 minutes from time from a Lowe cross, but he headed straight at Jon Brain.
