Coventry stroll past Exeter

Coventry strolled to a comfortable 3-1 win against Exeter at the Ricoh Arena to end a run of four matches without victory.

The League One side had the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second-round tie effectively wrapped up by half time thanks to a double from young wing-back Aaron Phillips. The 20-year-old, who father David was a City player when they won the FA Cup in 1987, made the home side's dominance count in the 34th minute when he was quickest to react inside the visitors' area. John Fleck's shot through a crowded area was palmed away by debutant goalkeeper James Hamon, but Phillips turned the whipped it home. He did not have to wait long for his second which came in first half injury time. He turned sharply on the edge of the area and curled in a left-footed effort which gave Hamon no chance. Coventry made two changes at half time to bring on the youngsters, but any hopes Exeter may have harboured of a comeback were quashed when Josh McQuoid was put in by Simeon Jackson and slid the ball in off the luckless Hamon. Exeter kept at it and got their reward when young substitute Ollie Watkins netted his first senior goal five minutes from time.
