Davis spot on for Railwaymen
Tuesday 20 March 2012 23:25, UK
Harry Davis struck from the penalty spot to ensure Crewe saw off Bradford 1-0 and kept within distance of a play-off spot.
A scrappy game burst into life when Bradford's Andrew Davies handled in the box with 22 minutes on the clock. Davis, son of Alex boss Steve, made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick, drilling an unstoppable finish low into the right corner of the net. The centre-back should have doubled his account when he met Ashley Westwood's free-kick but keeper Jon McLaughlin did well to dive low and tip away his header before it could cross the line. The Bantams spent a long time restricted to long-range efforts, although the best from Ricky Ravenhill and James Hanson still failing to trouble Alex stopper Steve Phillips. Deane Smalley nodded a near post header wide before Hanson volleyed over as the visitors upped their game after the break. Hanson blew the Bantams' best chance when Simon Ramsden's cross eluded defender Dave Artell, with the striker steering his free header wide, before substitute David Syers managed to miss another golden opportunity in injury time.
