      Substitute strikes to sink Mariners

Darlington substitute Curtis Main proved to be the match-winner when he bagged a crucial goal in the 87th minute to finally kill off Grimsby and earn his side a 1-0 win. The 16-year-old replaced Franz Burgmeier in the 83rd minute and he was in the right place to head in a Ricky Ravenhill cross four minutes later for his first career goal. The game looked to be heading for a stalemate as both sides squandered chances, the best of which had fallen to Darlington front man Danny Carlton who side-footed wide from six yards. Former Darlington striker Adam Proudlock was the big danger up front for Grimsby, blazing the ball over the crossbar from outside the area with five minutes gone, and then, four minutes from the interval, firing wide from inside the area following a low cross from Adrian Forbes. The hosts also struck the woodwork twice with Burgmeier hitting the post from close-range in the 24th minute and midfielder Jason Kennedy lobbing the ball onto the Grimsby bar with 47 minutes gone. Liam Hatch also fired wide for the hosts who looked to be set for a point until Main's intervention.
