Lyon maintained their winning start to Group E by cruising to a 4-0 victory away to Debrecen.

Hungarian debutants undone by early onslaught

Lyon went clear at the top of Group E after maintaining their winning start to the UEFA Champions League with a 4-0 victory away to Debrecen. The Ferenc Puskas Stadium in the Hungarian capital of Budapest was packed hours before kick-off for Debrecen's first home game in the Champions League. But the buoyant home crowd was stunned into silence as Kim Kallstrom and Miralem Pjanic struck inside the opening 13 minutes. Sidney Govou's deflected header made it 3-0 in the 24th minute while Bafetimbi Gomis completed the scoring in the 51st minute for Lyon, who next have a double header with Liverpool.

    Upset

Debrecen had hoped to cause an upset after an encouraging display in their group opener at Liverpool, losing just 1-0 to the English giants, but their hopes were dashed by a superb start by the French visitors. Leandro had to head Aly Cissokho's cross behind and Pjanic directed the corner straight to Kallstrom, who swept home a third-minute half-volley from the edge of the box. Home goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic had to be alert to keep out an inswinging free-kick by Kallstrom but moments later Pjanic produced a strike that even free-kick king Juninho, Lyon's previous number eight, would have been proud of. The young Bosnian playmaker curled the ball right-footed over the wall and just inside Poleksic's right-hand post from 22 yards. Zsolt Laczko fired well wide in reply before Govou glanced another Pjanic corner goalwards and the ball deflected past Poleksic off Peter Czvitkovics. Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris rushed out moments later to deny Czvitkovics, who was played in by Debrecen's French striker Adamo Coulibaly. Czvitkovics then tested Lloris from distance just after the half-hour mark, yet it was Lyon that went closest to scoring again before the break, Poleksic denying Govou a superb second after the France international outwitted two defenders.
    Half-time boost
Coulibaly fired wide just after the restart for Debrecen, who boosted their attack with the introduction of fit-again goal-getter Gergely Rudolf at half-time. Gomis then blazed over for Lyon but moments later the summer signing latched onto Kallstrom's long ball to round Poleksic and lob the covering defender. Lloris had to tip over a long-range effort by Rudolf as Debrecen pushed for a consolation and the Debrecen striker turned Czvitkovics' corner against a post. But Lyon might have made the victory more emphatic as Govou fired straight at Poleksic and Jean Makoun twice headed wide in the final 25 minutes.
