Doncaster claim third victory on the bounce

Billy Sharp grabbed his fifth goal in as many games as Doncaster claimed a narrow victory over Bristol City at the Keepmoat Stadium. The on-loan Sheffield United frontman pounced in the 12th minute as he fired home after latching onto a loose ball. Alvaro Saborio and Nicky Maynard went close after the interval as the Robins rallied but they were unable to prevent Rovers from claiming a third successive victory without conceding. Doncaster made a good start and Dean Shiels sent an effort wide after finding space just outside the box. And with 12 minutes gone the home side got the goal their early pressure deserved when Sharp took advantage of some uncertainty in the Bristol City defence and pounced on a loose ball before firing past Dean Gerken. Rovers continued to press forward in search of a second goal and they should have had one 11 minutes later when Shiels got away down the left and whipped in a fine cross but Sharp headed wide from close range.

    Threat

That let-off sparked City into life and they gradually began to pose an attacking threat with Maynard having a shot from 20 yards saved by veteran Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan. Minutes later Paul Hartley also tried his luck from distance but his shot did not trouble Sullivan. Doncaster regained control of proceedings towards the end of the half with James Coppinger bringing a save out of Gerken. Visiting boss Gary Johnson brought Saborio on for Marvin Williams at half-time and he almost drew the Robins level minutes after the break but his shot from just outside the box was kept out by the alert Sullivan. Minutes later Maynard got a sight of goal but his shot was superbly blocked by Doncaster's James O'Connor. The visitors were piling forward in search of the equaliser and the lively Saborio saw his shot from 20 yards flash wide.
    Rhythm
Doncaster eventually began to find their rhythm once again and Coppinger found space inside the box before firing over. Soon after John Oster whipped in a corner which found Jason Shackell but he could only direct the header wide. As the game wore on it was Doncaster who were looking the more likely to get a second goal and Sharp should have doubled their tally just after the hour mark but shot wide. Johnson brought Lewin Nyatanga on for Lee Johnson and once again the substitution came close to paying dividends when the former Derby defender headed wide from close range. City pressed late on but they were unable to find a way through as Doncaster held on for all three points.
