Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Burton Albion: Hosts win on penalties

Cameron Stewart fired home the decisive spot-kick as Doncaster beat Burton 5-3 on penalties in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section first round following a goalless stalemate in 90 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium.

But it was half-time substitute goalkeeper Marko Marosi who was the hero of the hour, crucially saving Tom Naylor's tame spot-kick, having earlier pulled off two excellent stops to deny Albion.

Neither side created anything of note until the 20th minute when Rovers debutant Paul McKay's volley from eight yards was deflected over.

That spurred Burton into action, with Aurelian Joachim testing Thorsten Stuckmann before Anthony O'Connor's deflected header had the big German stopper sprawling to his left to save.

An enterprising run from Billy Whitehouse set up Curtis Main, whose low effort was beaten away by Burton goalkeeper Remi Matthews just shy of half-time.

Albion forward Lucas Akins crashed a shot into into the side-netting two minutes after the restart, while Main's effort from 20 yards brought an excellent one-handed save from Matthews.

After a good spell of possession from Rovers, Burton upped the ante, with Akins side-footing wide from 10 yards and O'Connor seeing a bullet header fisted clear by Marosi, who then denied Jerome Binnom-Williams.
