England's Karen Carney and Fara Williams on target in 2-1 win over Colombia
Thursday 18 June 2015 10:44, UK
Karen Carney’s second goal in two matches helped England to a 2-1 win over Colombia, sending them through to the knockout stages of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
Fara Williams added a second from the penalty spot before Lady Andrade’s late consolation, but France’s 5-0 win over Mexico means England finish Group F in second place and now face Norway in Ottawa on Monday night.
Colombia made a promising start with Andrade’s mazy run setting up an early opportunity for Gaitan, whose half-volley from the edge of the area cleared the crossbar.
England sprung into action and Casey Stoney should have given them the lead after 12 minutes, but the centre-back headed over from eight yards following a short corner.
But just three minutes later England opened the scoring. Skipper Steph Houghton’s free-kick was parried by Sandra Sepulveda and the on-rushing Carney poked home to give England the lead.
Within a minute of the restart England had a penalty shout turned down after an attempted cross from Fran Kirby appeared to strike a Colombian hand.
It was one-way traffic but Andrade had a 25-yard effort for Colombia which drifted wide after the tricky forward jinked away from a couple of England defenders.
But England were soon two-up following the rather fortuitous award of a penalty for handball when Colombia’s Carolina Arias handled Toni Duggan’s shot while on the floor. Williams made no mistake from the spot, firing to the goalkeeper’s right to score her 38th international goal.
England should have been three-up early in the second half after a delightful outside of the boot flick from Jade Moore fell to Alex Scott, but the full-back blasted over from 12 yards.
Colombia went on the attack as the second half progressed with Rincon going close with an audacious 30-yard effort.
Substitute Lianne Sanderson could have scored with 15 minutes remaining but the Arsenal Ladies forward scuffed her shot after some neat build-up play involving Jordan Nobbs and Toni Duggan.
Colombia were lucky not to have been reduced to 10 players when their goalkeeper took out Jodie Taylor outside of her box with the striker clean through on goal. Sanderson then forced a fine save from Sepulveda as the game approached added time.
But Colombia ensured it was a nervy last few seconds for England when Andrade lobbed Karen Bardsley from close-range in the penultimate minute of stoppage time, but England held on to book their place in the last 16.
