Equatorial Guinea progress to quarter-finals

Senegal crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations as Equatorial Guinea secured progress to the quarter-finals with a dramatic 2-1 win in Group A. A late strike from David Alvarez clinched the historic victory as Senegal struggled to cope with a waterlogged pitch in Wednesday's evening game. Senegal were in the ascendancy early on and created a couple of chance to take the lead. Mohamed Diame made surging runs on the right wing while Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba both had great opportunities. Cisse chested down a ball over the top and volleyed on the turn only to be denied by Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Danilo. Ba then found himself in space right in front of goal, but failed to hit the target as he pushed his shot wide from close range. The Teranga Lions continued to push forward until the break but could not find the opener as it remained deadlocked at 0-0.

Turned on its head

After the break, Equatorial Guinea put together a couple of promising attacks through Javier Balboa, but his final delivery let him down when his side needed it most. The game was turned on its head in the 62nd minute when Iban Randy put the co-hosts in the lead. David Kily provided the cross from the right and Randy did the rest as he headed home with ease. Senegal responded and put the co-hosts under tremendous pressure, creating some decent chances in the process. And they were rewarded in the 89th minute when a free-kick into the Equatorial Guinea area was pounced on by Moussa Sow after an initial block. The substitute netted it from close range to keep Senegal's AFCON dream alive. However, late drama in Bata saw Alvarez net a scorcher of a goal from long range to send the home crowd into rapturous celebrations as they edged out Senegal with a stoppage-time strike.
