Exeter 1-2 Grimsby: 10-man Mariners withstand Exeter pressure
Saturday 29 December 2018 19:47, UK
Grimsby withstood a barrage of Exeter pressure to come away with a 2-1 win at St James Park despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.
Martyn Woolford gave the visitors an early lead but Alex Whitmore was sent off in the 51st minute.
Jayden Stockley eventually levelled for the hosts with 12 minutes left, but Mitchell Rose scored from the spot soon after as the Mariners cinched a fourth straight win.
Grimsby took the lead after 15 minutes when a cross into the box was headed into the air and Woolford cracked home a superb volley.
Exeter had a goal ruled out when Chiedozie Ogbene's shot was bundled in by Tristan Abrahams, who the officials deemed was offside.
Whitmore was sent off for a late tackle on Jake Taylor early in the second half and Exeter took control.
But it took them until the 78th minute to equalise as Grimsby defended well.
They were unlocked by Nicky Law, who picked out Stockley with a perfect cross and the striker glanced in his 16th goal of the season.
Almost immediately, Grimsby were awarded a penalty when Dara O'Shea fouled Ahkeem Rose and Mitchell Rose rolled the resulting spot-kick past Christy Pym from the spot.
Exeter created plenty of chances in a thrilling finale, but Grimsby - thanks largely to the brilliance of goalkeeper James McKeown - held firm.
