Hartlepool climbed off the bottom of League Two with a smash-and-grab 2-1 win at Exeter on Saturday.
Exeter dominated the first half, but had nothing to show for their efforts. The closest they came was through their impressive England under-20 international Matt Grimes, who twice forced the Hartlepool goalkeeper into good saves. Hartlepool came closest to breaking the deadlock through Dan Jones, who headed against the crossbar, but it wasn't until the 49th minute that the deadlock was broken. Michael Duckworth was given far too much time to get down the right and get his cross in and he picked out Michael Woods, who volleyed past Christy Pym. Pools made it 2-0 on 69 minutes and again, Exeter were poor defensively as the visitors' worked their way through the home defence with alarming ease and Charlie Wyke slotted past Pym. Christian Ribeiro headed in from close range to make it 2-1 with ten minutes to go, but despite having chances, Exeter could not get that equalising goal. The best of those chances fell to Scot Bennett, but he headed over from David Wheeler's cross deep into stoppage time.
