Grecians into play-off places after St James Park romp

Exeter turned on the style to move back into the play-off zone by thrashing hapless Macclesfield 4-0 at St James Park. The Grecians, who moved up to seventh place in League Two, completely dominated from start to finish and were 2-0 up at the break. Their opening goal came on 16 minutes when Dean Moxey crossed low to the near post and the recalled Adam Stansfield got in front of his marker to flick a smart volley past Jon Brain. Macclesfield had gone close with an early effort from Emile Sinclair which he dragged wide of the far post when through on goal, but it was a rare foray forward in a one-sided half. Stansfield, with a deft header from Neil Saunders' corner, and Marcus Stewart both had headers cleared off the line for Exeter, who doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Stewart ventured forward and fed Richard Logan, who let fly from 25 yards. His shot took a wicked deflection before nestling in the net. The Grecians maintained a high tempo after the break playing some fine football. They eventually won at a canter with two further goal in the space of a minute. Firstly, Saunders finished smartly after Matt Gill's shot had cannoned off the upright and then substitute Craig McAllister also followed up well to convert from close range after Stewart's shot had been saved by Brain. Exeter had further chances to have won by a larger margin, while Macclesfield offered little in attack after the break. Sinclair's effort, which went high over the bar, the closest they came to a consolation.
