Hamburg will be confident of booking their place in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup after a 3-1 win at FC Zurich.

Hamburg will feel confident of booking their place in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup following a 3-1 win away at FC Zurich. The German side have struggled domestically of late and will be happy to return to winning ways in such comprehensive fashion. David Jarolim put them on their way after 49 minutes when he collected Jose Paolo Guerrero's flick on to fire a right-footed effort low into the bottom corner. Guerrero, who had replaced Rafael Van der Vaart just after the half hour mark, was once again involved in Hamburg's second on 67 minutes when his cross form the right found its way to Ivica Olic and the Croatian striker made no mistake from just inside the box. The game then ended as a contest when Piotr Trochowski fired an unstoppable 25-yard free-kick past a stricken Johnny Leoni with 77 minutes on the clock. Zurich did pull a goal back two minutes from time when Eric Hassli displayed his ability from dead-ball situations to fire in another fine free-kick, but Hamburg proved to be too strong on the night and the Swiss side now look almost certain to bow out of the competition after next week's second leg in Germany.
