Fulham v Tottenham preview: Jan Vertonghen available for Spurs
Sunday 19 February 2017 13:56, UK
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is available for Sunday's FA Cup fifth-round tie at Fulham.
The Belgium international has been absent since suffering an ankle ligament injury against West Brom in January.
Spurs have won two of their five matches without Vertonghen, most recently losing back-to-back games against Liverpool in the Premier League and Gent in the Europa League.
They squeaked past lower-league opposition in the fourth round of the FA Cup, scoring twice late on to beat League Two Wycombe at White Hart Lane.
Fulham's preparation for the visit of their London rivals has been good, with Slavisa Jokanovic's side winning four of their last five games.
They have already seen off one Premier League opponent in the competition after scoring four goals in a comprehensive victory over Hull City in the previous round.
Team news
Tomas Kalas is available for selection for the hosts but Ryan Fredericks is suspended.
Jokanovic also confirmed Marcus Bettinelli will start in goal for the Championship side.
Vertonghen is likely to start on the bench but Danny Rose and Erik Lamela are still out with knee and hip injuries respectively.
Harry Kane sustained a knock to his knee in Spurs' Europa League defeat to Gent on Thursday and may not be risked at Craven Cottage.
Opta stats
Tottenham have progressed from five of their previous six FA Cup ties against Fulham, but were knocked out by them in the most recent meeting (4-0 in round four, 2010/11).
However, since that 4-0 win, Fulham have lost each of their last three games versus Spurs at Craven Cottage.
Ryan Sessegnon scored and assisted in Fulham's fourth-round victory over Hull - he also scored in the third round versus Cardiff.
Heung-Min Son has scored in both rounds of Spurs' FA Cup campaign so far, scoring in the 97th minute versus Wycombe to help his side progress.
Fulham have not knocked out two Premier League teams in the same FA Cup campaign as a lower league side since 1998/99 (Aston Villa and Southampton).
Spurs have progressed from 12 of their last 13 FA Cup ties against teams from lower down the pyramid - the exception being against Leeds in 2012/13.
Merson's prediction
This should be a good game. Fulham are a good football team and Tottenham have got a lot of other commitments with the Europa League and a big battle to finish in the top four.
With the way things have gone in recent weeks, that's really not a foregone conclusion and they need to stay in the Europa League as another way of getting into the Champions League next year.
They won't want a draw and a replay because they don't want more games to contend with. I think Spurs will just about nick this one.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2 (7/1 with Sky Bet)
Betting
Tottenham will be looking to bounce back from a testing week and are 17/20 with Sky Bet for victory over lower-league rivals at Craven Cottage. The hosts trade at 29/10 with a draw on offer at 14/5 as the Cottagers head into the fixture on the back of two 3-2 home victories in the Championship. Lucas Piazon has impressed this season for the home side and he is a 17/2 chance to open the scoring and 11/4 in the anytime betting.
