Gillingham sink City

On-loan Tottenham pair Andy Barcham and Leigh Mills were on target as Gillingham beat Chester 2-0 to heap further misery on Simon Davies's struggling side. Despite Chester arriving in Kent without a win since September 13, it was the visitors who made the early running and they were almost rewarded in the 35th minute but Simon Royce was equal to Kevin Ellison's low drive from the edge of the box. Gillingham responded well and Mark McCammon turned a hopeful ball into a good chance when he held off Paul Linwood before forcing Chester goalkeeper John Danby in to a smart save. With Gillingham barely threatening, boss Mark Stimson moved Barcham into a more central role on the hour and within seven minutes the striker repaid his manager's faith by tapping home from close range after Nicky Southall flicked on Albert Jarrett's cross. The lead was doubled in the 74th minute as centre-back Mills found space in the area and powerfully headed home John Nutter's cross from the right wing.
