Mark McCammon was Gillingham's hero with a nervous penalty in a 4-3 shootout win over Colchester after the game finished 1-1 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round at Priestfield. Gillingham midfielder Adam Miller's penalty rattled the bar but goalkeeper Alan Julian made amends by saving David Fox's effort with David Perkins then missing the vital kick. Simeon Jackson put the home side ahead with a penalty in normal time but Clive Platt equalised with a header from two yards out. A darting near-post Miller header from Chris Palmer's corner just shaved the crossbar after 33 minutes as the home side dominated the first half. Then 15 minutes from time Jackson netted his sixth of the season from the spot after John White rashly tackled tricky winger Andy Barcham. But with only four minutes left, Julian could only parry Scott Vernon's six-yard header, leaving Platt to nod in on the line. Curtis Weston sent a one-on-one wide right at the death after Miller's ball presented him with a simple chance to settle the tie.
