Clayton seals Crewe triumph

Image: Powell: Two goals, one assist

A last-gasp header from Max Clayton secured Crewe a 4-3 victory against 10-man play-off rivals Gillingham at Priestfield.

The Gills had come from two goals down to level things up at 3-3 thanks to strikes from Chris Whelpdale and teenager Ashley Miller, only for the hosts' Danny Spiller to be sent off for a challenge on Jordan Brown. And Crewe took advantage in the last play of the game as Clayton headed in Byron Moore's cross. The game sprang into life 27 minutes in, as Nick Powell fired in from 30 yards. Gillingham equalised early in the second-half through Jack Payne's neat finish only for Crewe to net a quick-fire double with 17-year-old Powell setting up Ajay Leitch-Smith before scoring his second on 53 minutes. On 67 minutes, Whelpdale reduced the deficit after capitalising on some poor defending before Danny Kedwell set up Ashley Miller for his first goal in senior football five minutes later. Once Spiller was giving his marching orders, Gills were on the back foot and they paid the price as Clayton headed in to keep Crewe's play-off charge alive.
