McCombe gaffe sinks Vale

Gillingham were gifted a 1-0 victory over managerless Port Vale thanks to a John McCombe's own-goal. The defender nodded the ball past his own keeper midway through the first half after getting caught in two minds trying to deal with John Nutter's free-kick. Vale - who sacked boss Lee Sinnott on Monday after 10 months in charge - were toothless in front of goal with Marc Richards and Luke Rodgers both missing chances. Nutter could have opened the scoring for the Gills early on but his effort whistled past the post. Gillingham, without a win in their last two games, didn't have to wait long to break the deadlock with Nutter's free-kick finding the back of the net via McCombe's miscued header. The hosts almost doubled their lead shortly after the break but Simeon Jackson fired over the bar. Vale were clinging on and should have slipped further behind in the final 10 minutes but Jackson smashed the ball against the post to the relief of stranded keeper Joe Anyon.
