Weston strike salvages draw for Gillingham

Curtis Weston's late volley kept Gillingham's 11-game unbeaten home league record intact against table-topping Wycombe, who were lucky to leave with a point in a 1-1 draw. The Chairboys barely had a shot on goal but took the lead when a defensive mix-up saw Stuart Lewis put through his own net. But after missing a host of chances to draw level, Weston struck five minutes from time as Wycombe's lead at the top of League Two was cut. Gillingham dominated the first half, but it was Wycombe who took an undeserved lead after 31 minutes. Under little pressure, goalkeeper Simon Royce fired his clearance straight into stand-in full-back Lewis with the ball rolling into the net. The home team immediately responded and two minutes later a near-post Dennis Oli header was deflected inches wide. In the second half, substitute Gary Mulligan was narrowly off target with an overhead kick and in the 81st minute Weston missed a simple volley from close range. However, he made amends with a 20-yard volley that found the top corner after Angelo Balanta had only half cleared Nicky Southall's corner.
