Belgium claim draw in Heraklion

Euro 2012 qualifiers Greece failed to impress as they were held to a 1-1 draw in Belgium. Fernando Santos's side, who qualified for the finals in Poland and Ukraine as Group F winners, took an early lead as Dimitris Salpigidis lapsed onto a defensive mix-up. But Belgium were not to be denied as they levelled through Nacer Chadli's header. Greece looked good in the early stages of the contest and were ahead just nine-minutes - although there was some luck about the goal. Belgium full-back Nicolas Lombaerts's misjudged back-pass was picked up by Fanis Gekas. The chance seemed to have gone as his pass looked to have failed to reach its target, but Thomas Vermaelen slipped and allowed Salpigidis to prod the ball home from close range. Belgium improved thereafter and they drew level just after the half-four mark. Eden Hazard's corner was flicked on by Vincent Kompany and Chadli scored with a diving header at the back post. Vermaelen then almost took the chance to make amends for his earlier slip as he was sent clear, but he clipped his shot wide. The second-half was a poor affair and was little surprise no further goals arrived. Slovenia will provide the next opponents for Greece on May 26th before a match against Armenia five days later. They will kick off Euro 2012 campaign in Warsaw against co-hosts Poland before playing the Czech Republic and Russia in Group A.
