Grimsby recorded their first home win in the league since March as they edged past Shrewsbury 1-0. Adam Proudlock's strike after 53 minutes was enough to give manager Mike Newell his first success at Blundell Park. The Mariners should have taken the lead after 11 minutes but Liam Trotter's shot was punched over by Shrews goalkeeper Matt Jilks. The visitors went close when a Ben Davies free-kick dropped just over the bar, before the hosts took the lead against the run of play. Nick Hegarty's cross from the left eventually found Proudlock who turned and hammered a volley into the roof of the net. Shrewsbury had a golden chance to draw level a minute later when Jamie White raced clear, but he dragged his shot wide of the post as Grimsby held out to secure a surprise three points.
