Lappin and Murphy on target at Easter Road

Motherwell rounded off a memorable season with a 2-0 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road. Simon Lappin gave Well, who have qualified for the Uefa Cup with their third-place finish, a dream start in the capital before teenage striker Jamie Murphy sealed the win with his first goal for the club in the second half. The Motherwell fans were in party mood with sombreros and beach balls reminding their hosts of their European qualification and their spirits were lifted further when Lappin scored a superb fourth-minute opener. Stephen Hughes was brought down on the edge of the box and the on-loan Norwich midfielder curled the free-kick into the top corner. Hibs responded with Colin Nish and Rob Jones both seeing attempts cleared off the line as the hosts created the bulk of the first-half chances. Murphy was a half-time substitute for Well and, five minutes later, he netted his first senior goal when scoring from the penalty spot after Ross McCormack had been pulled back by Jones. Nish somehow shot over from six yards for Hibs, but the second half belonged to Mark McGhee's side as Well closed out the match with few further anxious moments.
